Budgeting - Who Pays For What
A glimpse into the basics of cost splitting to help guide your budgeting process, and what's best for you and your families.
Chances are you're planning your wedding and like most couples will be covering the cost of your wedding. Yet many times it's your families who will take on the task of ensuring your dream day is just that, a dream.
There are no hard rules when it comes to the budgeting! But it's best to know your overall budget before you begin meeting with your professionals. I call this realistic determination. Your determination to create your fabulous day must be tempered with the reality of costs. Below you will find a traditional look at how the costs may be covered by your families. These aren't set in stone so grab your pencil and paper and get to work!
Ceremony
The bride and family pay for the church or synagogue, sexton, music, etc.
The groom and family pay for the marriage license and officiant fee.
Wedding Attire
The bride and family pay for the bride's dress, her veil, accessories, and related items
The groom and family pay for the groom's tuxedo or suit.
All of the attendants pay for their own clothing (and shoes).
Flowers and Decor
The bride and family pay for wedding flower designs for the ceremony, this includes the chuppah if it's a Jewish wedding ceremony. The wedding flowers for the wedding reception, bouquets for bridesmaids and those cute flowers girls.
The groom and family pay for the bride's wedding bouquet, boutonnieres for the men in the wedding party and flower treatments for the mothers and grandmothers.
Honeymoon
Groom and family pay for the complete honeymoon.
Photography
Bride and family pay for all wedding photography and wedding video.
Pre-Wedding Celebration
The bride's and groom's families plan and host the engagement party. The bride's family hosts the first one if there are multiple parties.
The groom's family plans and hosts the rehearsal dinner.
The Maid of Honor and Bridesmaids host the bridal shower and bachelorette party.
The Best Man and Groomsmen host the bachelor party.
Your friends may throw additional parties or showers for you. (Thumbs up!)
Reception
The bride and family pay for all professional services, including meals and decor.
The groom's family pays for the entertainment, DJ or band, and liquor.
Rings
The bride and her family pay for the groom's ring.
The groom and/or his family pay for both of the bride's rings.
Stationary
The bride and her family pay for invitations, announcements, and wedding programs.
Transportation
The bride and family pay for the wedding transportation of the wedding party for the day.
Use this template as a barometer to meet your challenge before you. It's a simple way to make a beginning at the harshest task in planning the perfect wedding day.
